With stable hearing loss, the hearing loss remains the same, and thus a person continues to hear as poorly throughout his or her life. With progressive hearing loss, a person\u2019s hearing deteriorates, and he or she may eventually hear nothing at all. This is usually the case, for example, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horendgoed.nl\/en\/hearing\/hearing-loss\/deafness\/\">age-related deafness<\/a>.    <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Causes of hearing impairment<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several possible causes of impaired hearing:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>cerumen plug, otitis media acuta, otitis media with effusion, otitis externa, chronic otitis media, barotrauma;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>age-related deafness (presbyacusis);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>noise-induced hearing loss;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>use of ototoxic drugs;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/hoorproblemen\">M\u00e9ni\u00e8re\u2019s disease<\/a> (attacks of spinning dizziness and tinnitus);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.horendgoed.nl\/en\/hearing\/hearing-problems\/\">otosclerosis<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cholesteatoma;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>acoustic neurinoma;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sudden (unilateral) hearing loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aging Deafness<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Age-related deafness, also known as presbyacusis, is the most common cause of impaired hearing. As age advances, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horendgoed.nl\/het-gehoor\/hoe-werkt-het-gehoor\/\">hair cells in the inner ear<\/a> wear down resulting in hearing loss. This occurs as early as age 30, but usually does not become noticeable until age 50. Age-related deafness is gradual and is usually progressive, meaning that hearing gradually deteriorates. Age-related deafness is actually a form of noise deafness; it is affected by the amount and strength of sound we are exposed to in our lives. Fortunately, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horendgoed.nl\/en\/hearing\/prevention\/\">several tips<\/a> to reduce these effects.     <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hearing worse at work<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those with impaired hearing may experience problems at work. Functioning can be affected by fatigue, environmental noise, impaired speech understanding and failure to recognize sounds. This has a major impact on communication and safety, and affects an estimated 200,000 working people in our country. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ggmd.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GGMD for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing<\/a> offers career counseling for this purpose. When it comes to preventing hearing damage, employers are sometimes required to provide hearing protection.
