In fact, sight and hearing are close friends in processing speech and sound. In this blog, we dive into the world of hearing, body language and why a well-lit room can really help with communication.  <\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wat-heeft-licht-met-horen-te-maken\"><strong>What does light have to do with hearing?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People with poorer hearing often use more than just their ears to follow conversations. They rely on visual cues such as facial expressions, mouth movements and body language to complete the message. In a dark room or in poor light, this becomes a lot more difficult. This is why a person with hearing loss can literally \u201chear better\u201d when the lights are on.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Consider:<\/strong><br\/>\ud83d\udd39 Lip reading \u2013 Subconsciously, you pick up a lot from mouth movements.<br\/>\ud83d\udd39 Facial expressions \u2013 A smile, a frown or raised eyebrows give additional context to words.<br\/>\ud83d\udd39 Hand gestures and body language \u2013 What someone does with their hands or how they move sometimes says as much as words.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For someone with hearing loss, all that visual information is incredibly important to understanding a conversation properly.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-liplezen-de-geheime-superkracht-van-slechthorenden\"><strong>Lip reading \u2013 The secret superpower of hearing impaired people<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lip-reading is something many hearing-impaired people do (unconsciously). Words like <em>\u201ctree\u201d<\/em> and <em>\u201ccake\u201d<\/em> may sound completely different, but try saying them without sound in front of a mirror. The mouth movements are quite similar!  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a well-lit room, lip-reading is much easier, allowing a person to better follow what is being said. But when it\u2019s dark or when shadows fall across someone\u2019s face, it becomes quite a puzzle. And then confusion, miscommunication and a lot of <em>\u201cWhat are you saying?\u201d<\/em> moments ensue.  <\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hoe-ons-brein-geluid-aanvult-met-beeld\"><strong>How our brain complements sound with images<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our brain is a great problem solver. When a hearing impaired person doesn\u2019t hear a word correctly, the brain fills in the missing information with what it does see and know. This is called the <strong>McGurk effect<\/strong>: what you see can literally affect what you hear.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if you see someone say <em>\u201cba\u201d<\/em> but you hear <em>\u201cda,\u201d<\/em> your brain will combine the two and may perceive something completely different. This just proves how important sight is to communication! <\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-situaties-waarin-licht-een-verschil-maakt\"><strong>Situations where light makes a difference<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that we know that hearing-impaired people need visual support, it makes sense why good light helps with understanding conversations. But when do you notice this most? <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2705 <strong>During dinners or get-togethers<\/strong> \u2013 Candlelight is cozy, but a disaster for communication. Turn on a light!<br\/>\u2705 <strong>In crowded rooms<\/strong> \u2013 Lots of background noise? Eye contact and lip reading help tremendously.<br\/>\u2705 <strong>At parties or gatherings<\/strong> \u2013 The more people, the harder it becomes to follow one conversation. Good light makes it easier to see facial expressions and mouth movements.<br\/>\u2705 <strong>Video calls<\/strong> \u2013 Zoom and Teams are useful, but if someone is poorly lit, lip reading becomes a challenge.   <\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tips-voor-beter-communiceren-met-een-slechthorende\"><strong>Tips for communicating better with a hearing impaired person<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Want to help someone with hearing loss understand you better? Here are a few simple but effective tips: <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udca1 <strong>Provide good light<\/strong> \u2013 A simple desk lamp or ceiling lamp can make a world of difference.\ud83d\udc40 <strong>Make eye contact<\/strong> \u2013 Don\u2019t talk facing the wall or while walking away.<br\/>\ud83d\udc44 <strong>Speak clearly and calmly<\/strong> \u2013 But don\u2019t overdo it, excessive articulation actually makes it more difficult.<br\/>\ud83d\udccf <strong>Keep a normal distance<\/strong> \u2013 Too far away makes it difficult to see mouth movements. Too close becomes uncomfortable.<br\/>\ud83d\udeab <strong>Don\u2019t hold your hands in front of your mouth<\/strong> \u2013 This blocks lip-reading.<br\/>\ud83c\udfa7 <strong>Avoid background noise<\/strong> \u2013 Turn down the TV or move to a quieter place. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By making these small adjustments, communicating for the hearing impaired becomes a lot more pleasant.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-maar-waarom-hebben-horende-mensen-hier-nooit-last-van\"><strong>But \u2026 why do hearing people never suffer from this?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good question! People with normal hearing can often have conversations in the dark or in noisy environments without difficulty. That\u2019s because they don\u2019t rely on visual support. Their brains automatically fill in any gaps in sound based on context and experience.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the hearing impaired, it works differently. They often already have difficulty processing certain frequencies or sounds. As a result, they have to rely more on lip-reading and body language to complete the message.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So a well-lit room is not a luxury, but a necessity for someone with hearing loss!<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conclusie-licht-helpt-je-echt-beter-horen\"><strong>Conclusion \u2013 Light really does help you hear better<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the next time someone says, <em>\u201cPlease turn on the light so I can hear you better,\u201d<\/em> you\u2019ll know why.
