Just quickly grab a cotton swab after showering and \u201cclean it up. Because that earwax, it doesn\u2019t belong there, does it? It doesn\u2019t look fresh, it sometimes feels a little greasy, and before you know it, you feel like your ear canal is \u201cclogged. But what if we told you that this habit is not only unnecessary, but downright <strong>bad for your ears<\/strong>?    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this blog, we\u2019ll tell you why you better stop using cotton swabs in your ear canal today. What earwax actually is. And more importantly, what you can <strong>do<\/strong> if you feel your ears need cleaning. Spoiler: the answer has everything to do with technology AND caution.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Earwax: a dirty mess or a clever protective layer?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s start at the beginning. Earwax \u2013 also called cerumen \u2013 is not a waste, but a natural protective mechanism of your body. It is produced in the ear canal and consists of a mixture of skin flakes, fats, sweat and dust. Not exactly a sexy cocktail, but incredibly useful.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earwax:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protects the skin in your ear canal from drying out<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stops dust, bacteria and other invaders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keeps your ear canal slightly acidic (preventing fungi and infections)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gradually transports dirt outward toward your auricle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, your ear is a <strong>self-cleaning system<\/strong>. And as long as you leave it alone, it does its job just fine. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What goes wrong with cotton swabs<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet millions of people use a cotton swab daily to \u201cclean\u201d their ears. And that\u2019s where it goes wrong. Because that wad of cotton on a stick seems harmless, but it can do more harm than good.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You often push the earwax <strong>deeper<\/strong> into the ear canal, rather than taking it out<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You disrupt the natural drainage of earwax<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You make small wounds in the skin of your ear canal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You increase the risk of <strong>congestion, ear infections and hearing damage<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the worst case, you can even damage your eardrum. And believe us: you don\u2019t want that. Especially if you already have hearing loss or wear a hearing aid, your ears are vulnerable. Then the last thing you want is an inflammation or damage by \u2026 a stick of cotton wool.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">But my ears are full!<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people simply produce more earwax than others. Others have ear canals that are narrower or curved, making it harder for wax to come out. And yes, if you wear hearing aids or often have earplugs in, it can accumulate a little faster.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, the feeling of \u201cfull ears\u201d or dull hearing is recognizable. But still a cotton swab is <strong>not<\/strong> the solution. So what is?  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bebird: ear cleaning with sight<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of poking your ear by feel, these days you can use technology. The <strong>Bebird<\/strong> is a good example. Note: daily use is neither necessary nor desirable. Think of it as maintenance, not a cleaning routine.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When do you need to remove earwax?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So in most cases, you don\u2019t have to do anything. But there are exceptions: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You have a <strong>gag<\/strong> that interferes with your hearing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You suddenly hear dully or less well<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your hearing aid does not function as well due to earwax buildup<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You suffer from earache or pressing sensation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that case, you can try cleaning gently with the Bebird. Or \u2013 when in doubt \u2013 make an appointment with an audiologist or family doctor. Especially if you have frequent blockages, it is smart to have this professionally assessed.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What about children?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with children, don\u2019t pick at the ear canal. Then it\u2019s time to unlearn that habit. Here are some tips:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t put cotton swabs in plain sight anymore<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clean only the outside of your ear with a soft cloth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give yourself permission to watch with a Bebird once a week, if it feels necessary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remind yourself: your ear cleans itself<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you know what the great thing is? Then it\u2019s important to pay extra close attention to earwax. Not because you need to clean more often, but because these aids can interfere a bit with the drainage of cerumen. As a result, you will notice that you have a plug a little more often or that your device feels \u201cdirty.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our advice:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clean your hearing aid or earplugs regularly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check with a Bebird to make sure a clot does not form<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clean carefully, only when necessary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have your ear canal checked annually if you wear a lot of aids<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stop prodding, start watching<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The days of blindly poking your ear with a cotton swab are truly over as far as we are concerned.
