Ear candling (also known as ear candles) has grown considerably in popularity in recent years, especially through social media and wellness channels. But does it actually work? And more importantly, is it safe? <\/p>\n\n

What exactly is ear candling?<\/h2>\n\n

Ear candling involves inserting a hollow candle made of beeswax or cotton into your ear, then lighting the top. The candle is said to create a kind of vacuum that sucks earwax, bacteria and \u201ctoxins\u201d out of your ear. Afterwards, there is often a yellowish-brown residue in the remaining candle, which supporters of the method say is the earwax removed. <\/p>\n\n

It sounds impressive. But alas: science tells a different story. <\/p>\n\n

Does ear candling work?<\/h2>\n\n

In short: no. Multiple scientific studies have shown that ear candling does not create a vacuum, does not remove earwax and has no positive effects on your hearing or health. That brown stuff in the candle afterwards? That is simply melted beeswax and burned residue from the candle itself \u2013 not from your ear, but from the candle. <\/p>\n\n
