Music is often loud, you have to shout to understand each other, and when you get home you can still feel the bass thumping in your body. But sometimes you also notice something else: a high pitched beep or a soft buzzing in your ears. We call that <strong>tinnitus<\/strong>, or in medical terms <strong>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horendgoed.nl\/en\/hearing-problems\/all-about-tinnitus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tinnitus<\/a>\n<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone suffers from it from time to time after a night out, but when is it harmless and when should you be concerned? In this blog, we dive deep into tinnitus: the causes, the dangers and, most importantly, what you can do about it. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wat-is-oorsuizen-eigenlijk\">What is tinnitus anyway?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tinnitus is a sound you perceive without an external sound source. It can sound like: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A high-pitched beep<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A buzzing sound<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hissing, rustling or whistling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This sound occurs because the cilia in your inner ear (which pick up and transmit sound waves to your brain) become temporarily overexcited or even damaged. After a night out with loud music, they can still vibrate afterward or transmit wrong signals, causing you to hear a beep that isn\u2019t actually there. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-waarom-krijg-je-oorsuizen-na-een-avond-uit\">Why do you get tinnitus after a night out?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a concert or night out, your hearing is exposed to sound levels of 90 to 110 decibels or even higher. By comparison:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A normal conversation is around 60 decibels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A vacuum cleaner around 70 decibels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A club or festival can easily exceed 100 decibels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At such noise levels, your ears take a big hit. The cilia in your inner ear become overloaded and send false signals. This manifests itself in that annoying beep.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wanneer-is-oorsuizen-onschuldig\">When is tinnitus harmless?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news: in many cases, the squeak is temporary. It often disappears within a few hours to a maximum of 24 hours. We call this <strong>temporary hearing loss or temporary tinnitus<\/strong>. Your ears simply need rest to recover.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You usually don\u2019t have to worry if:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The squeak disappears after a few hours or days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buzzing does not recur daily<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have no other complaints such as dizziness or hearing loss<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wanneer-moet-je-je-zorgen-maken\">When should you worry?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes tinnitus is a warning sign that your hearing is suffering permanent damage. Especially if you often go to loud parties, the temporary ringing may eventually become permanent. Pay extra close attention if:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The beep persists <strong>for more than a week<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You experience <strong>hearing loss<\/strong> in addition to tinnitus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buzzing increasingly <strong>recurs<\/strong> after going out<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The sound is not just a squeak, but also hums, taps or whistles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have difficulty following conversations, especially in noisy environments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In those cases, it is wise to have your hearing tested by an audiologist or family doctor.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hoe-gevaarlijk-is-oorsuizen\">How dangerous is tinnitus?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One night out with a squeak the next day does not have to mean immediate permanent damage. But: the more often your ears are exposed to loud music, the more likely the tinnitus will become chronic. Chronic tinnitus can be enormously drastic. People experience:   <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Concentration problems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sleep problems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stress and fatigue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduced quality of life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So it is not a problem to ignore. Your hearing is fragile and damaged cilia in the ear do not recover. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wat-kun-je-doen-als-je-oorsuizen-hebt-na-een-avond-uit\">What can you do if you have tinnitus after a night out?<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-geef-je-oren-rust\">1. Give your ears a rest<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avoid loud noises the day(s) after. Don\u2019t turn music up too loud and give your hearing a chance to recover. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-slaap-voldoende\">2. Get enough sleep<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rest is important. During sleep, your brain and senses have a chance to recover. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-vermijd-cafeine-en-alcohol\">3. Avoid caffeine and alcohol<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These drugs can worsen tinnitus because they affect blood flow and nerve stimulation in your ear.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-zoek-afleiding\">4. Find distractions<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t pay constant attention to the beep. Put on quiet background music or listen to <strong>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horendgoed.nl\/en\/hearing-problems\/white-noise-a-spotify-playlist-against-stress-and-tinnitus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">white noise<\/a>\n<\/strong>, so that the hiss is less noticeable. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-bezoek-een-professional\">5. Visit a professional<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If symptoms last longer or get worse, get your hearing tested. The earlier hearing damage is noticed, the better you can prevent it from getting worse. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hoe-kun-je-oorsuizen-voorkomen-tijdens-een-avond-uit\">How can you prevent tinnitus during a night out?<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gebruik-oordoppen\">Use earplugs<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The very best way to prevent tinnitus is simple: <strong>earplugs with music filters<\/strong>. These muffle the sound by an average of 15 to 20 decibels, without making the music sound indistinct.
