Learning to talk seems to come naturally: babbling turns into words, and before you know it they&#8217;re chatting whole sentences together. But what if this process doesn&#8217;t come naturally? A <strong>speech delay<\/strong> can have many causes, and hearing problems are an important one. After all, if a child can&#8217;t hear sounds or words well, how can they imitate them correctly?    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this blog, I explain how hearing problems play a role in speech delays, how to recognize them and most importantly, what you can do as a parent, caregiver or teacher to help a child.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hoe-werkt-de-relatie-tussen-gehoor-en-spraakontwikkeling\">How does the relationship between hearing and speech development work?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Language learning begins with listening. Babies hear their parents&#8217; voices, the sounds of their surroundings and store this in their brains. By mimicking sounds, they learn to talk step by step. When there are hearing problems &#8211; temporary or permanent &#8211; a child misses crucial input. It&#8217;s like trying to put together a puzzle, but always missing a few pieces.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hearing problems can lead to:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Difficulty distinguishing sounds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Delayed vocabulary development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unclear ruling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Less self-confidence in communication<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-oorzaken-van-gehoorproblemen-bij-kinderen\">Causes of hearing problems in children<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every hearing problem is the same. These are the most common causes in children: <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-middenoorontstekingen\">Middle ear infections<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many children have frequent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.horendgoed.nl\/en\/hearing-problems\/what-is-a-middle-ear-infection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">middle ear infection<\/a><\/strong>. This is often accompanied by fluid behind the eardrum, making sounds duller. This is also called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.horendgoed.nl\/en\/hearing-problems\/glue-ears-causes-symptoms-and-treatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">glue ear<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-oorsmeerprop\">Earwax plug<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the cause is simple: too much earwax blocks the sound. However, never use a cotton swab to remove it. This often pushes the plug deeper into the ear and can damage the eardrum.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-aangeboren-slechthorendheid\">Congenital hearing impairment<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A proportion of children are born with hearing loss. Thanks to newborn hearing screenings, this is usually detected quickly. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tijdelijke-doofheid-bij-verkoudheid-of-allergie\">Temporary deafness from colds or allergies<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A blocked Eustachian tube can cause sound to come in muffled. A nasal spray can help with this. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hoe-herken-je-een-spraakachterstand-door-gehoorproblemen\">How do you recognize a speech delay due to hearing problems?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can be difficult to distinguish between a child who just talks a little later and one who has hearing problems. Watch for these signs: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your child is unresponsive or late to sounds and voices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It seems to have trouble following instructions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is frequent &#8220;huh?&#8221; or misunderstanding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It uses fewer words than peers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Verdict remains unclear, even in later life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In doubt? Trust your gut and get hearing tested. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wat-kun-je-doen-als-ouder-of-verzorger\">What can you do as a parent or caregiver?<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-laat-het-gehoor-testen\">1. Have hearing tested<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horendgoed.nl\/en\/make-an-appointment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hearing test at an audiologist<\/a> or ENT specialist is the first step. The sooner you know what&#8217;s going on, the sooner you can intervene. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-neem-oorklachten-serieus\">2. Take ear complaints seriously<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does your child often have ear infections or complain of ear pain? Always discuss this with your doctor. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-stimuleer-taalontwikkeling-bewust\">3. Encourage language development intentionally<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talk a lot with your child, read books together and sing songs. Repetition and rhythm help tremendously in learning language. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-overweeg-hulpmiddelen\">4. Consider tools<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For permanent hearing problems, a hearing aid or, in some cases, eardrum tubes may be a solution. This can restore speech development. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-logopedie\">5. Speech Therapy<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A speech therapist can do targeted work on pronunciation, vocabulary and listening skills. Especially when combined with hearing support, this can make a big difference. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-de-rol-van-de-school-of-opvang\">The role of the school or shelter<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teachers and teaching assistants also play a major role. They see children daily in a social context and often notice when a child is behind in language or communication. Collaboration between parents, school and professionals is crucial.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tips for the classroom or daycare:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provide a quiet listening environment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look closely at the child when you talk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat instructions and use visual support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give the child extra time to respond<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wat-als-je-niets-doet\">What if you do nothing?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An untreated speech delay can have major consequences:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Difficulty learning to read and write<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Problems with social interaction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduced self-confidence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Backlog in school that is difficult to make up<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s why early intervention is so important.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gehoorproblemen-aanpakken-is-spraakontwikkeling-redden\">Addressing hearing problems is saving speech development<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A speech delay need not be permanent. Often it is a signal that there is more to it &#8211; hearing problems, for example. The earlier these are detected and treated, the more likely a child is to catch up with language and enjoy communicating again.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So do you notice that your child is less responsive to sound or talking, or that language development is slow? Don&#8217;t wait, get hearing tested.
