Babies are like little heaters, but their ears \u2026 that\u2019s another story. Those are sensitive, fragile and totally not made for inclement wind, rain or snow. And if there\u2019s one thing I always hear parents say, \u201cHis head is warm, but those ears \u2026 brrr.\u201d   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this blog, I take you through everything you need to know to keep those cute little flaps warm, safe and healthy. And yes, I\u2019ll tell you right away why baby ears are sometimes like soup bowls that catch everything you don\u2019t want \u2013 cold, wind, moisture and even bacteria. Rest assured: with the right tips, you\u2019ll come a long way.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-waarom-zijn-de-oren-van-baby-s-zo-gevoelig\">Why are babies\u2019 ears so sensitive?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Babies have a thermoregulation that is still developing. Where you can effortlessly endure a cold gust of wind over your ear (okay, effortless-ish), a baby has more trouble doing so. The skin is thinner, blood circulation has yet to learn to optimize, and the ear\u2019s cartilage is still soft and flexible. That\u2019s nice for photos, but less useful in an autumn storm.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cold and wind can cause the auricle to cool, and that not only makes for an uncomfortable feeling, but can also contribute to ear problems. Think ear infections, ear canal irritation or simply a baby crying making it clear he is not enjoying himself. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-de-wind-als-grootste-boosdoener\">The wind as the biggest culprit<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there is one enemy of a baby\u2019s ear in winter, it is wind. Even a gentle breeze can feel uncomfortable for your baby. The cold blows directly on the ear canal, which can make the earplug \u2013 if you use it \u2013 cold and damp, and irritate the skin around it. No fun.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s not even mentioning windy rainstorms or snowfall. A combination of moisture and cold is a recipe for discomfort. And babies let you hear it immediately, loud and clear.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hoe-voorkom-je-dat-de-oren-te-koud-worden\">How do you keep the ears from getting too cold?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The basics are simple: <strong>protect, protect, protect<\/strong>. But how you do that makes the real differences. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kies-voor-een-goede-muts\">Choose a good hat<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The classic. A hat that covers the ears is a must. But beware: not every hat is suitable for babies. The best options have:   <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ear flaps that fit well<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A soft, breathable fabric (cotton or fleece, no coarse wool directly on the skin)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A strap or string under the chin so the hat does not shift<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And trust me: babies are masters of hat sabotage. Without a chin strap, you\u2019ll be back with an exposed ear within two minutes. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gebruik-een-winddichte-kinderwagenkap\">Use a windproof stroller hood<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not just the hat that does the job. The stroller can be your best friend on cold days. A windproof hood prevents the wind from blowing directly on your baby\u2019s face and ears. Especially on long walks, this is worth its weight in gold.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An additional tip: don\u2019t open the hood too far. As tempting as it is to see your baby glow, the wind always finds a way in. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-beschermend-hoofdbandje-of-oorkapje\">Protective headband or earmuff<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are special baby ear muffs and soft straps that you can put around the head. These fit softly, do not give pressure and keep the ears protected without muffling hearing. Useful for in the sling or during short outings.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note: always choose models designed specifically for babies. No makeshift solutions; babies have sensitive skin. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wat-als-je-baby-toch-nat-wordt\">What if your baby does get wet?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can have the latest stroller hood, a hat that fits securely and the ability of a ninja to dodge wind, but sometimes it just happens: your baby gets wet. Rain, snow, drool (I include that), or an overturned sippy cup can get ears wet. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wet ears can cool and cause irritation. If this happens: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gently pat dry with a clean, dry cloth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid cotton swabs (always)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Afterwards, make sure your baby is warm and sheltered again<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drying should be done naturally. Do not put wipes in the ear canal; it does more harm than good. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-waarom-baby-s-sneller-oorontstekingen-krijgen\">Why babies get ear infections faster<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ear infections and babies: it\u2019s almost a clich\u00e9. But it has a logical cause. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horendgoed.nl\/en\/news\/what-does-the-eustachian-tube-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eustachian tube<\/a> \u2013 the tube that regulates pressure in the ear \u2013 is shorter, narrower and more horizontal in babies. As a result, moisture can get trapped more easily. Combine that with cold and wind causing irritation, and you have an ideal storm for ear problems.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Warmth and protection keep irritation at bay, and that reduces the likelihood of problems.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hoe-herken-je-dat-de-oren-te-koud-zijn-geweest\">How do you recognize that the ears have been too cold?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Babies can\u2019t say, \u201cHey, mom\/dad, my ear feels weird.\u201d But they do communicate. You just have to learn to read the signals.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Redness of the auricle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Crying for no apparent reason<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A baby pulling his ear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restless sleeping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stuffy nose combined with ear discomfort<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you see this often after outdoor time? Chances are the ears have caught a cold. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-warm-maar-niet-te-warm-balans-is-de-sleutel\">Warm, but not too warm \u2013 balance is key<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Babies also overheat faster than adults. So you want to find a middle ground: warm enough against the cold, but not so hot that your baby looks like a mini-sauna visitor. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tips:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Choose breathable materials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid thick wool directly on the skin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check regularly to make sure your baby is not sweating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use layers \u2013 you can easily adjust them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The motto: keep warm without the sauna effect.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-speciale-bescherming-tijdens-winteractiviteiten\">Special protection during winter activities<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are you really going out into the cold? Consider:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Snow Fun<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Winter walks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Days out in inclement weather<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Winter sports (yes, some parents are ambitious)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this kind of activity, ear muffs, winter hats with thick lining and possibly protective ear plugs \u2013 especially for babies \u2013 are not a luxury.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earplugs for babies? Yes, they exist. Especially useful in high winds or water activities. But always choose models suitable for baby ears and never use them without consulting a specialist.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-en-binnenshuis\">And indoors?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside is often warm and comfortable, but drafts can play a role there, too. Especially in older homes, a cold draft can sometimes be surprisingly effective in reaching a baby\u2019s ear. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avoid sleeping areas right next to windows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check vents and doors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t put the cradle in the draft line<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It often only takes two minutes, but saves a lot of crying.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kleine-oren-grote-aandacht\">Small ears, big attention<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your baby\u2019s ears deserve as much attention in winter as the rest of their body. They are sensitive, vulnerable and often the first to be affected by cold and wind. With a good hat, protective accessories, thoughtful use of the stroller hood and a little vigilance, you can prevent a lot of misery.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you\u2019re taking a short walk in autumn rain or a snowy hike that sounds like a Christmas movie: keep those ears warm.
