Together, the ossicles \u2013 hammer, anvil and stirrup \u2013 form the mechanical heart of your hearing. Tucked away in the middle ear, they work like a perfectly tuned mini-lever that converts sound waves into vibrations that your inner ear can do something with.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You rarely hear them mentioned unless something goes wrong. Time to change that. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-waar-zitten-de-gehoorbeentjes-precies\">Where exactly are the ossicles located?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ossicles are located in the middle ear, a small air-containing space behind the eardrum. That middle ear forms the link between the ear canal and the inner ear. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The order is always the same:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The eardrum captures sound<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The hammer is attached to the eardrum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The hammer moves the anvil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The anvil sets the stirrup in motion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The stirrup transmits the vibration to the inner ear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It sounds simple, but this is a mechanical marvel that works faster and more precisely than many a Swiss watch.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-de-hamer-de-eerste-klap\">The hammer: the first blow<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The humerus (malleus) is the first ear bone in the chain. It is attached directly to the eardrum. As soon as sound waves vibrate the eardrum, the hammer moves with it.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can think of the hammer as the first link that says, \u201cOkay, let\u2019s get started.\u201d It converts the movement of air into a mechanical vibration. Without a hammer, the sound would literally die against the eardrum.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-het-aambeeld-de-slimme-doorgever\">The anvil: the smart pass-through<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The anvil (incus) sits between the hammer and the stirrup. It acts as a kind of conduit, but don\u2019t underestimate it. This bone ensures that movement is transmitted in a controlled and efficient manner.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The anvil helps ensure proper leverage. This amplifies the sound before it reaches the inner ear. Not electronic, but purely mechanical. Old technology, perfectly executed.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-de-stijgbeugel-het-kleinste-botje-in-je-lichaam\">The stirrup: the smallest bone in your body<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stirrup (stapes) is the smallest bone in the human body. It is about the size of a grain of rice, but its task is enormous. The stirrup is in direct contact with the oval window, the gateway to the inner ear.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the riser vibrates, these vibrations are converted into fluid movements in the cochlea. And that\u2019s when sound is converted into nerve signals that your brain understands as speech, music or that one irritating beep from the microwave oven. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-waarom-zijn-gehoorbeentjes-zo-belangrijk\">Why are ossicles so important?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without ossicles, you would still pick up sound, but extremely softly. In fact, they provide an amplification of about 20 to 30 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horendgoed.nl\/en\/news\/what-is-a-decibel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decibels<\/a>. That difference is gigantic.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They solve a physics problem: air vibrations are bad at moving fluid. And your inner ear is full of fluid. Thanks to the ossicles, that transition is smoothly regulated.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, without ossicles, the world would sound as if everything were taking place behind a thick wall.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wat-gebeurt-er-als-de-gehoorbeentjes-niet-goed-werken\">What happens when the ossicles don\u2019t work properly?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When one or more ossicles malfunction, conductive hearing loss occurs. This means that sound does not reach your inner ear properly, while the inner ear itself may still be working fine. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Common causes are:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.horendgoed.nl\/en\/hearing-problems\/what-is-a-middle-ear-infection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Middle ear infections<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.horendgoed.nl\/en\/hearing-problems\/what-is-otosclerosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Otosclerosis<\/a> (fusion of the stirrup)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Damage from prolonged inflammation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trauma or hard blows to the ear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is often dull hearing, as if there were cotton wool in your ears constantly.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-otosclerose-als-de-stijgbeugel-vastloopt\">Otosclerosis: when the stirrup gets stuck<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In otosclerosis, the riser slowly grows solid, preventing it from vibrating freely. This process is often gradual and is relatively common in adults. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the stirrup is essential for transmission to the inner ear, hearing slowly declines. Sometimes surgery can help, partially replacing the stirrup with a small artificial part. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A great example of how crucial even the smallest bone can be.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gehoorbeentjes-en-hoortoestellen\">Hearing bones and hearing aids<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hearing aids amplify sound, but they do not solve a mechanical problem in the middle ear. For pure conductive hearing loss due to problems with the ossicles, hearing aids can sometimes help, but not always optimally. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some cases it is chosen:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A surgical solution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horendgoed.nl\/en\/products\/when-is-a-bone-anchored-hearing-system-right-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bone conduction solution<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or a combination of treatments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, proper diagnosis by an ENT doctor or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.horendgoed.nl\/en\/make-an-appointment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">audiologist<\/a> is essential. Not every hearing loss comes from the same \u201cpart of the ear.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bescherming-van-je-gehoorbeentjes\">Protection of your ossicles<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although ossicles are sturdy, they are not indestructible. Prolonged inflammation, pressure variations and hard blows can cause damage. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What helps:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protect ears from extreme pressure (when flying and diving)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Taking inflammation seriously and treating it promptly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.horendgoed.nl\/en\/tips-tricks-en\/10-common-things-you-should-never-put-in-your-ears\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Not putting objects in your ear<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If symptoms persist, don\u2019t dawdle; get it checked out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your ossicles are small, but they deserve great maintenance.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-waarom-dit-stukje-anatomie-ertoe-doet\">Why this bit of anatomy matters<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We often think of hearing as ears, eardrums or auditory nerves. But without the ossicles, that sound gets nowhere. They are the bridge between the outside world and the brain.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every voice, every piece of music, every subtle sound passes by these three bones.
