In the world of hearing care, you encounter a lot of terminology and jargon. We understand that sometimes you just don’t understand it all anymore. That is why we have created this dictionary, in which you can find the most important terms and we explain what they mean.

A

Audiogram

Dictionary - Audiogram

An audiogram is the result of your hearing test. This chart plots frequencies in hertz (Hz) against the required sound intensity in decibels (dB) to hear the tone. This allows us to determine where and how much you suffer from hearing loss.

D

Decibel (dB)

Decibel, often abbreviated to dB, is an index value for the magnitude of a sound level. Very simply put, more decibels means a louder sound.

H

Hertz (Hz)

Hertz, often abbreviated as Hz, is the unit of frequency, or the number of vibrations of sound per second. 1 Hz equals 1 vibration per second. The higher the number of hertz, the higher the tone. A healthy ear perceives tones between 20 and 20,000 Hz.

O

Otoplasty

Dictionary - Otoplasty

An otoplasty is nothing but custom hearing protection. Otoplastics are molded specifically to the customer’s ears for the perfect fit.

Otoscope

Dictionary - Otoscope

An otoscope is a medical instrument that allows the hearing care professional to inspect your ear canal and eardrum. With this, the audiologist looks inside your ears.

S

SNR

Dictionary - SNR

SNR stands for Single Number Rating and indicates the degree of attenuation of hearing protection. 25 dB SNR means you can “subtract” 25 dB from ambient noise.
