Hearing damage table

Why hearing protection?

We often don’t think about it, but there are many situations in which we can suffer hearing damage. We see the numbers increasing, especially among concert and festival goers, in construction, among handymen, motorcyclists and among fireworks victims. You sometimes hear “the louder the better,” but nothing could be further from the truth: direct hearing damage can occur from as little as 100 dB! Hearing damage is irreversible, so it is important to realize when you are at risk and take appropriate measures. This can be done with universal hearing protection, but if you use it more often, we recommend custom-made hearing protection. It is more comfortable and provides better protection.

This is how we customize your hearing protection

The process is simple and in case you are afraid of it: it doesn’t hurt at all! We begin by looking in your ears. We do this with an otoscope or videoscope. With a videoscope, you can watch yourself on a screen to see what your ears look like inside.

Customized hearing protection at Horend Goed

If everything is fine, you will receive a small soft cotton ball in your ear, followed by an impression material. You won’t feel any of this, at most it’s a little cold. We let the material sit for 5 minutes, then remove the print. If they have turned out well, we will let them harden further and they will be post-processed by the audiologist and provided with your personal wishes such as glitter or pictures. Finally, we lacquer them, and then your hearing protection is ready.

Normally, you can pick up your hearing protection the very next business day. You do need to do this yourself so that we can check that they are properly fitted and explain to you how to put them on and take them off.

Swimming plugs, sleep plugs or hearing protection

Swimming caps

Swim caps are a form of hearing protection. They are special earplugs that serve to keep water out of your ears, thus preventing ear infections. They also float, of course! They are ideal for children in swimming lessons and adults who do a lot of water sports.

Want to have swim caps custom made? Then come by during our swim cap walk-in! Every Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and every Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. you can just drop in on us without an appointment.

Sleeping plugs

Sleep plugs are secretly not actually hearing protection. After all, they don’t protect your ears from hearing damage. But they are very convenient, because these earplugs ensure a good night’s sleep by muffling ambient noise. They are made of high-quality silicone and can be fitted with a special filter if desired.

Hearing protection

This is actually the collective name for all earplugs that provide protection against hearing damage. Think concerts, festivals, in industry, while doing odd jobs, while riding motorcycles, etc. They can be made of high-quality silicone or acrylic and fitted with various filters, according to the situation. Of the same type of filter (flat or high-pitched), these are often even interchangeable, making this hearing protection multifunctional.

Types of filters and damping value

Our custom hearing protection is equipped with a professional filter suitable for your needs. There is a choice between a flat filter, a filter that attenuates evenly across all tones, or a high-tone filter, made specifically to attenuate the treble. Within those two types, in turn, you can choose the attenuation value, up to 33 dB SNR. The same type of filer, flat or high-tone, is often interchangeable. So, for example, you can take a flat filter of 15 dB SNR for in the pub, and take a flat filter of 33 dB SNR for at festivals and then use them in the same hearing protectors.

How long will my hearing protection last?

For adults, if properly maintained, hearing protectors last 2.5 years. This is harder to say for children, given that in growth the ears change. It is important to have new hearing protectors measured when they no longer seal or are uncomfortable.
