Pre-bent hearing aid tubing

Ear pieces come in many shapes, sizes and colors. The type of tubing between the earmold and the hearing aid can also change. It is important to replace the same type of tubing correctly.

Why replace a bent hearing aid tube?

Whatever type of (hollow) tubing is on the hearing aid and earmold, it will need to be replaced from time to time. The tubing gets a little yellow and hard from wearing (sometimes). The harder the tubing is, the unpleasant the wearing can be. Also, the sound of the hearing aid will not be as good. Prevent this by replacing the tubing on time.

Replace a hose no later than after 3 months.

Pre-bent hose with a spring

Straight tubing is available in various thicknesses. These are often used on “classic” behind-the-ear hearing aids.

These hoses are pre-bent, which means the bend is already in there. The spring, if any, ensures that the tubing stays securely in the ring of the earmold. These tubes are used in Comfoor earmolds, lifeshell earmolds and bikini earmolds. Comfoor earmolds are supplied by independent audiologists and by Beter Horen.

How do you replace a bent hose with a spring?

  • Remove the old tubing and clean the earpiece with an effervescent tablet.
  • Dry the earpiece and make sure that no moisture remains in the earpiece. Also check the canals carefully.
  • Place the tube with spring next to the earmold. The bend of the tubing should run nicely out of the earmold.
  • The spring should sit exactly in the colored ring.
  • Is the size not quite right? You can move the spring in the hose by pushing/ squeezing it a little with your fingers.
  • Is the correct distance of the spring determined? Then you can slide the tubing into the earpiece with the beveled side.
  • You do this from the outside (outer side) of the earmold
  • Pull the tube well through the earpiece so that the bend is in the right place and the spring is wedged into the ring.
  • Is it seated correctly? Then you can cut the hose at the spring with sharp scissors.
  • The tubing to the hearing aid will still be too long at this point. This must also be cut to size. There are 2 ways to do this:
  1. Lay the old hose along the new hose and cut the hose to almost the same length (preferably 1 mm longer)
  2. Place the earmold in your ear and place the hearing aid on your ear. Where the tone bend of the hearing aid crosses the earmold, cut the tubing 5 mm longer.
  • Correct length determined? Place the hearing aid back on your earmold and you’re done!

Earpiece problems

The hearing aid wobbles too much and falls off the ear:

This could be 2 things.
The hearing aid is not properly placed on the tube and the hearing aid is leaning out too much. Turn the hearing aid inward a little more.
Is the problem not solved? Then often the length of the tube is too long. Then cut the tube a little shorter, but be careful! It is millimeter work.

The hearing aid hurts on the ear:

Again, this could be 2 things.
The hearing aid is not properly placed on the tubing. Turn the hearing aid a little more outward.
Or the length of the tubing is too short. If so, you will need to fit a new tube.

The earpiece does not stay in place properly:

If the earmold tubing is too short, the tubing will pull the earmold out of the ear. The earmold may hurt, or you may lose the system. The concha hook sits weirdly or it just doesn’t sit right. The only solution is: Reinsert a new tube and watch the length carefully.

Thin tubes called thin tubes are also available. Thin tubes are brand specific.
