Autocross and Hearing Protection: How We Protect the Race and Our Ears

Welcome to our blog from Hearing Good! Today we are going to talk about a topic close to our hearts: autocross and hearing protection. We live a stone’s throw away from the Acon Autocross Circuit, or as we call it, “junkyard throw distance.” Every month we are treated to the sound of roaring engines and mumbling through the microphone. Although we don’t need ear muffs at home, it’s a different story once we go to the track.

The Atmosphere of Autocross

Autocross is not just a race; it is a spectacle. As soon as you enter the grounds, you are greeted by the smell of rubber and gasoline, the sight of brightly colored race cars and, of course, the sounds of roaring engines. It is an experience you experience with all your senses. For us, it’s a time to catch up with “y’all,” dodge prut and have a drink. It is a party in itself, and fortunately we can walk home!

Hearing Protection: A Must at Autocross

While the atmosphere is great, it also comes with a good dose of noise. The noise level can easily exceed 100 dB, which can be harmful to your hearing. That’s why hearing protection is essential. For us adults, but definitely for the kids as well.

Why Hearing Protection?

Prolonged exposure to sounds above 85 dB can cause permanent hearing damage. During an autocross race, the sound of the engines combined with the cheering of the crowd can greatly exceed this level. Therefore, we always wear our ear muffs with 25 dB attenuation to bring the noise level below the safe 85 dB.

A Day Out to the Autocross

Our trips to the Acon Autocross Circuit are always a highlight. The kids love watching the cars race and feeling the adrenaline. We make sure they always have their ear muffs on so their young ears are well protected.

It is also a great opportunity to meet other fans and enjoy the fellowship. Whether you are a seasoned fan or coming for the first time, the atmosphere is always warm and inviting.

Tips for a Safe and Fun Day of Autocross

  1. Wear Hearing Protection: This is a no-brainer. Make sure you have ear muffs that provide adequate attenuation. We recommend at least 25 dB of attenuation.
  2. Arrive Early: This gives you time to find a good spot and settle down quietly before the action begins.
  3. Bring sunscreen: Beautiful full day in the sun? Try not to come home crusty.
  4. Dress Appropriately: It can get muddy, so put on clothes and shoes that can take a beating.
  5. Enjoy and Make Fun: The most important thing is to enjoy the day and see the great races.

Have you become curious about autocross? The next race is on Aug. 10 and 11 in Sint Maarten at the Acon Autocross Circuit. It is a perfect opportunity to experience for yourself the thrill and excitement of an autocross race. Don’t forget to bring your hearing protection!

Conclusion

Autocross is a great way to spend a day, full of excitement, speed and fun. But it’s also important to think about your hearing. At Horend Goed, we have all kinds ofhearing protection to make sure you can enjoy the race without worrying about hearing damage.
