Swim plugs prevent ear infections

Swimming, surfing, sailing, water polo … you name it, we Dutch love everything to do with water. Unfortunately, ears and water do not always go well together. In fact, water that stays in the ear can cause the earwax that protects our ears to do its job less well. This makes you susceptible to fungi and bacteria that can cause an infection of the ear canal, also known as outer ear infection. This usually causes severe ear pain and can even cause permanent hearing damage if treated too late. So it is important to prevent this, which is why there are swim plugs.

What do swim caps do?

The function of swimming plugs is actually quite simple: they seal off the ears from the water. Because your ears remain dry, the earwax can continue to do its work and thus fungi and bacteria have no chance. With swim caps in, you can still hear everything, slightly muffled.

Universal swim caps

Several manufacturers provide universal swim plugs. These earplugs are not molded to the ear and are therefore only splash-proof. They are fine to use as an emergency or intermediate solution, but keep in mind that a small amount of water can always get through. We recommend combining these earplugs with a swim cap or headband. The best solution, especially if you spend a lot of time in and around water, are custom-made swim plugs. These earplugs are molded to your ears, providing a perfect seal. They are completely waterproof. This gives you the assurance that no water gets into your ears at all.
